GHOST HUNT AR - MVP

NOTE: IMAGES PRESENTED BELOW ARE NOT BEING RENDERED IN ITS DEFAULT COLOUR FORMAT. THE HOST TECHNOLOGY OF THIS BLOG RUNS AN IMAGE SHARPENING FILTER WHICH CHANGES THE DEFAULT IMAGE COLOUR PROFILE AND UNFORTUNATELY IT CANNOT BE TURNED OFF AS OF YET.

The Augmented Reality Ghost Hunt Experience is a mobile app designed to enhance the customer experience at the Old Geelong Gaol and other historic sites around Australia. Using advanced image recognition, 3D assets and tracking techniques we blend the real-world that users can see, hear and touch with the supernatural. This enables players of all ages to interact with historic landmarks in a new way, encouraging fun family activity in unique locations while remaining relevant for young players.

DEVELOPMENT

From the very beginning of development our goal was to create a Augmented reality mobile game with commercial quality standards. I was the only developer with art experience in the team. Therefore I took the liberty of handling development of all artwork in the game as Artist and Technical Artist.  This includes creating artwork for UI/UX, branding, character concepts, modelling all 3D assets, texturing all 3D assets, creating VFX (particle systems), animating UI/UX, characters and visual effects and programming shaders for the characters in game. ​I was also tasked with creating/ designing custom VuMarks for the game. A VuMark is the next generation bar code. It allows the freedom for a customised and brand-conscious design while simultaneously encoding data and acting as an AR target. VuMark designs are completely customizable, so you can have a unique VuMark for every unique object. We use VuMarks to spawn ghosts around the world.  Programming the initial implementation of the game Main Menu was another task I completed. 

We managed to finish developing the MVP (minimum viable product) weeks before it was due. We used the remaining time to polish the product to an extent where it was ready to be published on both Google Play Store and the Apple Appstore.  The app is now available on both iOS and Android platforms. SHADER PROGRAMMING

Code snippet

Added Specular Texture, Specular Colour, Specular power (multiplier), Emissive Texture, Emissive Colour and Emissive power (multiplier) features to Unity 2017 built in toon shader. This allowed me to use all of my character texture maps in Unity and tune the effects.

Code Snippet

I was responsible for programming the initial Main Menu User Interface. After creating UI artwork for the Main Menu, I scripted the Main Menu to verify its functionality.

Functionality includes toggling windows in-game, opening levels, and error handling. Most of the functions in this script is used in the final MVP build of the game. Most recent versions of the script was modified by other programmers to support newer features.
